Sun Simiao, a renowned Daoist priest and medical scholar of the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang dynasties, was known for his expertise in yin-yang, astronomical calculations, and medicine. He authored "Important Formulas Worth a Thousand Gold Ducats," which proposed the concept of "Great Medicine with Precision" - an important text on medical ethics that all aspiring doctors must read. Sun Simiao believed that great medicine required two qualities: first, precision (i.e., mastery of medical skills), considering medicine as "a matter of utmost subtlety"; secondly, sincerity (i.e., high moral character), aiming to empathize with others' suffering as if it were one's own.
The biography in the Old Book of Tang states that Sun Simiao was born in 541 AD during the Western Wei period. When he was seven years old, he began studying; by age twenty-five, he had mastered discussions on Confucianism and Buddhism. In his later years, Sun Simiao predicted that there would be a sage person fifty years hence who would need his help to heal people; when this prophecy came true during Emperor Taizong's reign (627-649 AD), Sun Simiao declined offers from officials but eventually returned to serve at court.
However, records about Sun Simiao's longevity are inconsistent; some accounts suggest he lived over one hundred years while others indicate a shorter life span. This has led to speculation about his actual age throughout history. Nonetheless, historical records confirm that Sun Simiao passed away in 682 AD at an estimated age of 141.
In Daoist tradition, Sun Simiao is revered as "Nine-Tiered Heavenly Pharmacist Lord," "Divine Physician Great Sage," "Heavenly Salvation Master Opened by Yuanzhen," among other titles.
